| ‘Arim
means a dam or embankment.
The Holy Qur-an
mentions about the famous Ma'arib dam, which was located near Sana,
the capital of Yaman (Yemen).
People of Yaman (Yemen)
were technically advanced and they had excelled in building construction and farming.
They constructed this dam for irrigating their fields and gardens. People of Yaman
(Yemen) flourished because of abundant
water that irrigated their fields and gardens. Their good times continued for
more than a millennium. With prosperity, people of Yaman (Yemen)
became arrogant and openly disobeyed Allah (God)
who had bestowed His Mercy upon them.
Yaman
(Yemen) was ruled by queen Saba
(Sheba) and its people had completely
forgotten Allah (God)
and His Commands.

Indeed there was
for Saba’ (Sheba)
a sign in their dwelling-place - two gardens on the right hand and on the left;
(and it was said to them:)
"Eat of the provision of your Lord, and be grateful to Him." A fair
land and an Oft-Forgiving Lord! Surah
(Chapter) Saba (Sheba) Qur-an 34:15 |
Before
the advent of Islam, Allah
(God) destroyed this dam to punish the thankless people
of Yaman (Yemen). A great flood
resulted when the dam was destroyed. The flood waters destroyed there gardens
and fields and rendered them useless for ever. It devastated the people of Yaman
(Yemen), who were known for their
affluence.
|
But they turned
away (from the obedience of Allah),
so We sent against them Sail Al-‘Arim (flood
released from the dam), and We converted
their two gardens into gardens producing bitter bad fruit, and tamarisks, and
some few lote-trees. Surah (Chapter)
